An Important News Story To Me: New York Rangers Reaching the Stanley Cup Finals
It has been 20 years since the New York Rangers advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals. On May 29, 2014, Ranger fans didn't have to wait any longer as their New York Rangers advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals in a thrilling 1-0 victory against the Montreal Canadiens in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Dominic Moore scored the only goal of the game, and Ranger's goaltender Henrik Lundqvist got his first shutout of the playoffs.
This game had some great moments, but my top moment of this game was the save Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made on Thomas Vanek in the second period. If Lundqvist didn't make this save, the Rangers would have not made it to the Finals. This save was also important because in Game 5, Lundqvist gave up 4 goals on 19 shots, and was pulled from the game. Knowing Henrik Lundqvist, he need to bounce back in a big way, and he did with that save, and get the shutout victory.
Minutes after Lundqvist's spectacular save, Rangers forward Dominic Moore would go on to score the game-winning goal of the hockey game. Dominic Moore was also playing for his wife Katie, who died of liver cancer last year. This would cause Dominic Moore to be away from the game for 18 months before returning to the Rangers, the team who drafted him 95th overall in 2000.
As a Ranger fan, I was full of mixed emotions, and my heart-rate skyrocketed, but I was extremely happy when they won the game. I was also completely jealous of my parents who were at this game. After I calmed down, I thought back about their journey to get to the Stanley Cup Finals. From the 7-game series against their rivals from Philadelphia, the unexpected passing of Martin St. Louis' mother, which sparked the incredible series comeback against the heavily favored Pittsburgh Penguins, leading up to this heart-stopping Game 6 against Montreal. It was truly the biggest hockey game in New York since 1994.
